Convert an annual salary into a day rate based on how many days you work per week and how many weeks you work per year.
This calculator is useful if you are comparing a salaried job with day-rate consulting, contract work, or freelance projects. It gives you a simple baseline before adjusting for taxes, expenses, unpaid time, and business overhead.
To convert an annual salary into a day rate, divide the salary by the number of working days in the year. Working days are calculated by multiplying the number of days you work each week by the number of weeks you work each year.
For example, if you earn $72,000 per year, work 5 days per week, and work 48 weeks per year, your estimated day rate is $300.
The basic formula is:
Day rate = Annual salary ÷ (days per week × weeks per year)
The result gives you an employee-equivalent day rate. If you are using this number to set a freelance or consulting day rate, you may need to charge more. Freelancers and consultants usually need to cover expenses, taxes, unpaid admin time, sick days, vacation, marketing, software, and gaps between clients.
A simple salary-to-day-rate conversion is a starting point, not the final answer. If you are self-employed, compare this result with your required freelance rate before accepting work.
